Digital Marketing of Tourism: Exploring the Social Media Trends

The increasing number of mobile users and lowering prices of digital marketing increase the effectiveness of social media in tourism. Now people can book them itinerates through an online medium using digital devices. Online medium is a convenient platform for the users which is of lesser cost and of a convenient platform to create innovative strategies. Social media includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. are some of the leading digital marketing tools for tourism these days. To explore the potential of social media in the promotion of tourist destinations, Kerala Tourism recently organized two workshops in association with Facebook, named as ‘Travel Goes Social’ the workshop and the social media campaign were conducted in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi. Social media strategies are a few of the multitude reasons which has led to the widespread adoption of digital marketing strategies by the travel and tourism industry.

The travel planners use social media not just to advertise or promote their offers, packages but also to encourage people to interact with the page more and gain more information about tourism, culture and living, sustainability and responsible tourism across the region, the state and the nation through images, fun facts, informative posts etc. These activities help the travel planners in reaching out to a wider audience and break the monotony of the kind of posts that people expect from them. Therefore, this paper critically evaluates the influence of the online marketing of tourism products in Kerala. In order to conduct the study, this paper employed an in-depth literature review.
